A Scary Night Drive

This incident happened one of those random nights when I decided to hit the road just for the heck of it. The journey was normal except for what we saw while returning back on that notorious road which have claimed lives of numerous travelers in that stretch by means of gory accidents!  I call it the snake road as it is narrow and zig zaggy but attracts a huge and heavy traffic leading out of Mysore.  Most people will recognize it as Ooty Road via Nanjangud, Gundulpet and Bandipur.  This particular night, we had not intended to go to Ooty but just hit the road and enjoy the darkness of the night in the middle of the forest "Bandipur" and return back at the first light of the sun.  But nothing happens as we plan, specially when we tend to just jump out of the seat and decide to visit some wildlife at the middle of the night!

It was a night when one of my Friend 'Syed' had visited us from Bangalore.  His intention was to attend a dinner party at his Brother-in-Law's home back here in Mysore to which even I was invited {Thank's to his Brother-in-Law, whom I had met just a week before at his Marriage!!}.  We soon reached the place and had a wonderful dinner filled with the Roti's and the Kebab's and a variety of veg and non-veg Gravies, as well as Biryani and not to forget desserts.  We had our tummy filled to the core!  Extra care was taken as we were from the newly married couple's side.  It was around 10:30 pm now and we bid adieu to the hosts and started walking towards Syed's Car.  This is when Syed said, "Vaseem let us go on a long drive.  It's been a while since we went out towards country side".  I would have instantly said 'Yes, let us go explore the wilderness' but for my wife staring at me for my answer.  By her look, I realized that she wanted me to decline which I politely did.  Syed said, "OK, I will drop you both and go towards Bandipur and return back by morning".  Faiza (My wife) asked Syed, "are you serious?".  I said "Yes!!".  Being a very good wife, she said "Okay, I know you guys are crazy, Go ahead".  Looking at me, she said "I mean you too, I don't want Syed's sister to yell at me for allowing Syed to go alone!"  Syed and me were delighted to listen to her and I thought, "I am so lucky to have such an understanding wife".  Before I could say any word "I am Joining you guys!" is what I heard and in an instant she sat in the back seat of the car Shutting the door behind with a thud!! "But dear"  I tried to explain, "you will get bored, its not safe, you don't even have a sweater in this cold night".  She rebuffed all my words and said, "I am going with you!"  Finally we had no other choice and we agreed.  "Girls! We can neither live with them nor without them!!! What a creation you made my dear GOD!"

We called up my parents informing them that we are not returning back for the night and we started to drive.  Syed was on the wheel and I was on the next seat.  We had one final round of discussion to convince my wife to stay back at the warmth of our house and let these two wanderers eat dust, but without any success!!  Finally, we decided that we will go inside Bandipur and stop before we hit the border checkpost and return back, as we did not want to pay any kind of bribe to cross the checkpost, nor answer any of those questions or face that random checking of night travellers to see if they were drunk or to see if they were doing some immoral activities etc, etc. We had also heard about stories of some of these officers getting drunk, demanding bribe specially during nights or hurling abuses using the filthiest of language that one might have heard off.  We all knew that not all cops were as bad as they were portrayed and I had personally met few of those real great cops during my travels.  But still the fear of facing one of those corrupt drunk cops made us take a decision that we will not go till the checkpost.  Since night driving in Jungles in Karnataka was not yet banned we could travel without the fear of being turning back from the gates of Bandipur!!

The journey started soon after we crossed the Mysore Palace.  It had started to drizzle and the night was getting colder as time passed.  Soon we were on the Snake road aka Nanjangud Road; Faiza was getting bored listening to our Boys talk about Cars, Bikes, Video Games, Future Goals, Nature and all the other topic except for the hot favorite "Girls!!".  Today we knew we can't talk about that topic; we had to restrict our talks and watch out what we talk seriously, else Syed would have been a witness to a gruesome Murder, Faiza would be behind bars and I would be playing a mandolin on one of those clouds floating in the skies!! Well soon enough we reached Gundulpet and we knew Bandipur was very close by and we stopped at a fuel station to fill the gas tank, where she finally confessed that she was better off at home. Anyways, there was no turning back and we started off soon and within sometime, we were driving on the hair-pin bends marking our entry into Bandipur.  After we crossed that, we were frantically trying to find out where exactly the checkpost was!  I didn't knew how near it was so after travelling little further down the road and we decided to stop right there (we later learned that the checkpost was further a mile away) and look out for any animals.  Our luck was not with us and we did not see any!  It was pitch dark outside and the sky was also covered with clouds. Me and Syed got down of the car to feel the cool breeze of the Jungle and relax ourselves.  The air was filled with moisture and we both were shivering with cold.  We could hardly see anything except the trees nearby when the lights of the car occasional flickered giving us a glimpse and assuring us that no wild animal was nearby when we were doing our business of watering the trees ;-)!!  Faiza had fallen asleep in the back seat but soon woke up and realized that we two were out of the car and she called me frantically to get inside the car.  After we were done with our business, we got inside the car and Syed turned on the heater to unfreeze us {the cold breeze had almost frozen us}!!

Faiza said, "this is enough, let us go back".  We both knew that we have to listen to the lady.  Somewhere deep in our heart, even I wanted to head back home immediately. I had already discussed this when we got down the car with Syed that more than the wild animals, we have to be careful about the Human Beasts who will kill just for the fun of it.  No matter how much we wanted to get out of the car and spend some time in the wilderness, we knew that we had taken a risk here. And bringing Faiza along with us in this cold winter night has just doubled the risk of getting into unwanted trouble!  We explained her the climate outside, she opened the window and felt the cool breeze and the drizzle that she felt on her hand made her smile for a while.  However she again repeated her words "let us go back, please".  Obliging to her request, we took a U-turn and started heading back and we reached a hotel near Gundulpet.  We got ourselves some hot Tea and couple of Biscuits to fill our stomachs which was demanding some treatment now.  It was around 2:30 am now when we left the place.  Faiza slept on the back seat cursing herself that she decided to join this stupid aimless drive.  Soon we were back to Nanjangud and I remember the time was around 3:15 am.  We were near to the Snake Road which will start soon after we cross the town.  We had to cross a long bridge over Kapila River!

I reminded Syed about the treacherous stretch as soon as we take a right turn and hit that bridge.  He reminded me of an accident that one of our friend survived at the end of the bridge and he slowed down his speed considerably and we were moving very very slowly.  The roads were all wet and by the look of it, we knew that rain had just subsided.  It was still drizzling and the wipers were moving on the glass.  There was no other vehicle that night when we started on that bridge and hence Syed was almost on the right side of the road to avoid some potholes that he had noticed.  Soon we crossed the bridge and the road turned hard left.  As soon as we crossed it, for some reason we had stopped talking and i was looking outside of the car through the front glass.  Since, I was sitting at the left hand side of the car, I was staring at the river which was now towards left side of the road and the approaching temple again left side, which was few hundred meters from the bridge. Suddenly I saw something at a distance lying nearby to the road. As the car was nearing to it slowly, I realized that it was a human lying just next to the road.  I didn't knew how to react but wanted to see if that person was a drunkard fallen asleep so dangerously close to the road or something else.  I could see water droplets falling from the sky and I was sure that something is terribly wrong with that guy.  All kind of permutations and combinations started running into my mind as we came very close to that person, my heart just skipped a beat!! I was so shocked at what I was looking at but didn't knew how to react.  It was a body of man well built in size lying on his tummy.  He appeared to be wrapped in a rag similar to the big brown bag of rice that we generally see in Stores!  The body was missing his head as if someone has chopped it off. The hands were also missing and so was the legs!!  It was appearing as if someone chopped this man into pieces and thrown in the river flowing few yards away.  But if that was the case, how could a headless, legless and body without hands dragged itself out of the river until the road?  While the car was passing him, I was the closest among we three. I did not even see if Syed was looking at the body.  My eyes were so locked with what I was looking at, that my head moved back till it vanished from my eyes.  The car had moved farther away and I regained my senses and I turned towards Syed who was trying to look at me as well as look at the road and we both blurted out the same question

"Did you see that?"..and I continued "I thought I saw a human body without its Head!" and Syed said "the legs and Hands were also missing"

This made a shiver go down my spine and I looked back at Faiza who was still sleeping comfortably without knowing what we both just saw.

I asked Syed to keep his voice low and not to scare Faiza and we started putting forward our theories that someone might have murdered him and had chopped his hands, head and legs off to throw into the swelling river etc., etc., and whether we should inform the Police patrol that we will come across while entering Mysore.  We both decided against informing the Police to keep out of trouble as the body would be found next day or a passing truck driver or bus driver would notify the authorities.  We had just crossed about 5 kilometers and we were still going real slow recovering from the shock of what we both had seen few kilometers back.  Then there was another shocker for us in store.  We saw a hand again wrapped in a rag lying in middle of the road.  The headlights of the car made it so clearly visible that without a doubt we recognized it;  It surely belonged to the body we saw back near the temple.  The scene of the arm reminded me of a scene from a Horror Movie wherein a zombie's arm is dragging itself.  I looked at Syed and I was sure he was thinking of the same.

However he broke silence and said, "This is unusual.  Strange know?  I have a feeling about this.."

I stopped and told him, "what feeling, looks like someone has committed this gruesome murder and thrown body parts all over the place.  Police will have a tough time tomorrow.  Let us get the hell out of here"

he said, "No Vaseem,  you don't get it. This doesn't look like a murder... It looks like some spirit who might have died on this stretch of the road"

"Shut up", I said.. Trying to suppress the new thoughts that Syed had ignited in my mind.. "This is clear case of someone killing this guy and throwing it everywhere to dispose of the body" I said..

He stopped me again trying to convince by all means that it could be a Ghost that we just looked at.  He was driving real slow now to ensure that he doesn't jump off one of those curves in that road.  He started off with his Paranormal experiences that he typically encounter at his ancient home.  He was so convincing that I was thinking if he has a Phd in Paranormal Investigation.  It is not that I don't believe in this other world beings or what we call them as ghosts and all but I have never encountered in person very convincingly to make me 100% believer in those beings.  I always thought it to be a part of an imagination of an idle brain like I had specified about in one of my earlier posts.

My thoughts were broken by the loud sound of a bus coming from behind. Now this was a crazy shit.  We did not realize that there was a bus behind us.  We never saw any headlights coming behind us except when we heard this loud honking sound and Syed steered suddenly to the left to avoid being run over by this Red Monster aka KSRTC bus.  It was as if the bus appeared from nowhere and its terrible lights were noticed only after he honked at us. Maybe we were too engrossed in what we were thinking that we did not notice the bus behind us! He zoomed passed us at a neck breaking speed without slowing down for the speed humps straight ahead.  There were rabbits running across the road clearly visible due to the lights of the car and the bus.  It appeared as if the bus driver wanted to run over those poor animals.  However he was not successful and soon the bus vanished like it had appeared.   No, it was not a magical disappearing act that we get to see in Harry Potter movies.  The bus was travelling very fast and we were going like a tortoise.

"From where the hell did he come from", I asked still gasping for air from this sudden appearance of this bus.

"I don't know"  Syed said.  "Look at the way he went" he continued trying to appear as calm n cool as possible.

Again the night became dark and silent and all we could hear is the heater of the car running and some feeble noise of the car engine and occasional thuds due to bumps in the road.  I was now partly convinced with Syed's theory of an Ghost rather than someone who got murdered and even I started to talk more about the ghosts stories I had heard over my life time.

"Well, did you observe" Syed said.

"What? what did I miss?" I asked him now partly scared but trying to act as if I am a dare devil and nothing could scare the shit out of me.

Syed continued, "The body it was on the left side of the road when we were almost on left side whereas on the bridge I was almost on the right side" he said.

I asked "so what?, what are you trying to tell"

"You are not getting the point, as soon as I moved towards left we saw that thing and then when I was in the middle of the road, that thing was in middle!!" He said making sure that he made my heart start beating faster n faster.

"Yes" I recalled and continued "Yes, you are right.. That hand went right under the hood of the car.  We passed it over.  Let us hope that we don't see any such thing again"

We were destined to see more of it. As we neared to Mysore, we noticed that the drizzling had almost stopped and the roads were real wet.  We were nearing to Chamundi hills when we saw some unusual stuff in the middle of the road again.  We slowed down again to get a proper look at it and I had almost puked at it.  It was a scene of a nasty accident wherein something was run over!  We could see chunks of meat strewn in the middle of the road and blood near it.  It appeared very fresh, could the bus have succeeded mowing down a rabbit or two or even a dog?  Or was it the missing leg/head of that body that was mowed down by the bus that had overtaken us?

Syed again broke the silence to show me what i was already looking at, "see there! he said"  before he could continue.. I said, "Syed I think your guess is correct about this being something else, let us just go home and hope nothing else come in front of us again".  We didnot dare get out of the car to reconfirm if it was really chunk of flesh that we saw!!

We soon reached home and Syed checked the car to see if that ghost has made itself cozy with the car or not.  We didnot want to discuss this with Faiza, even though she was asking what Syed was searching. We went to sleep as it was almost 4:30 in the morning now.

When we got up at around 11:00 am, I went through the newspaper to see if I could get something relevant.  Looking at my face, Faiza asked "what happened, what are you searching in that newspaper?".  We did not reveal to her anything again. We also realized that since it was early morning what we had seen there had little chance to get reported in morning Newspaper. And if it was really a murder or suicide as I was assuming it earlier, the evening daily would surely report it and we decided to wait for it.  However, our curiosity made us decide that we will go back to to Nanjangud after having our Brunch to see if Police has found the body or if we could get some clues to what we saw the previous night.

For some reason we did not leave home as planned that day and after finding nothing in the evening daily, we hit the road to check ourselves now totally convinced that it was not a case of murder.  We decided to go on a bike to explore the area.

We tried to identify the place where we saw chunks of meat and blood and when we found it, nothing was there!! However the nearby area was full of mud & slush due to rain previous night which could have been mistaken for what we saw previous night for chunks of meat and blood mowed down by something.  We were relieved that at-least this was a part of our imagination and nothing more.  This surely brought a smile on our face thinking how stupid we were to imagine same thing!  "But what about other things?", Syed asked and we moved ahead to identify the other places.

After travelling further that road, we took circles to identify the place where we saw the hand but we were not successful.  Nothing was available to identify what we saw or where we saw that hand so we decided to head further near that temple to see if there is something that we could see to confirm our theory of murder or ghosts.

Soon we crossed that temple and I parked the bike and we both started looking at the place where we saw the headless body of the man.  I recognized the place soon as there was a mud road next to the temple leading to the river.  But nothing was there! No body, no rag, no nothing!!  Syed was also trying to move around like a detective to find some clues.  We were sure that it was not a murder as it might have been reported in the newspaper or the people around that place would have been talking about it.  Then we came across this huge tree next to that road and we broke our investigation and assembled there to discuss our findings.

"The body appeared so huge that no doubt the man should have been at-least 80 kilograms.  How could it vanish?" I asked Syed to which he nodded his head in agreement that I had not mistaken what I saw.

Was it something else like Syed said or was it just imagination?  If It was an imagination, how could Syed also see the same stuff?  Now I came up with another theory that it might have been a gunny bag placed by someone carrying some sand or something similar.  However Syed was not sure about it as the hand was very much clear and appeared real.  Even I knew that it was an arm that we saw!  Not finding anything and not convinced we decided to move back to Mysore knowing that we will not forget this experience for a long long time.

When I started my bike and I was taking a turn to head back home, something caught my eye which I had just passed.  I stopped the bike and asked Syed to come along.  After we traveled few steps on the main road near the spot where we thought we saw something was lying a body of a small dog not far from that place.  The dog was dead!  It appeared to be a puppy but this scared the shit out of us.  The carcass was missing all its legs and its head!

We both knew that this was not the carcass that we saw previous night.  The size itself was totally different. The carcass what we are looking at is so small and what we had seen was so big.  This is a dog and what we saw appeared to be humanoid.  Confused, we both concluded that it was indeed something supernatural and decided to keep it a secret as no one will ever believe what we saw that night.  Later on as time passed, we just passed it off as an imagination of our sleepy brains that night.  An imagination so well synchronized that two different individuals saw same thing for which they will never ever find any answers!
